"Countdown to an Execution": documentary film and panel discussion featuring former Indiana Governor Joe Kernan Monday, February 28 2:00 p.m. Wynne Courtroom There will be a special premiere of "Countdown to an Execution," an A&E documentary (scheduled to air March 16) about the Indiana capital case of Darnell Williams. After the film, former Indiana Governor Joe Kernan will offer his perspectives on the case and capital punishment generally. Following the film and former Gov. Kernan's speech will be a panel discussion, featuring Juliet Yackel, Williams’s longtime lawyer; IU-Bloomington Law Professor Joe Hoffmann, Paula Sites of the Indiana Public Defenders Council, and students and staff from Northwestern's Center on Wrongful Convictions involved in the case. Indiana University-Indianapolis Law Professor and Dean Emeritus Norm Lefstein will moderate the panel discussion. When producers of A&E's American Justice learned of the last-ditch clemency effort on behalf of Darnell Williams, they launched the project that would culminate in "Countdown to an Execution." The show captures the drama of events leading up to Governor Kernan's decision to commute Williams's sentence to life without parole, five days before his scheduled execution. Co-sponsored by the Illinois Death Penalty Education Project of the Center on Wrongful Convictions at Northwestern University School of Law Call Prof. Fran Hardy for more details: (317) 274-5551
