Lecture on Justice Louis D. Brandeis

Frank Sullivan, Jr., Professor of Practice at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court from 1993 to 2012, will deliver an informal lecture on selected aspects of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis’s substantive legacy and discuss selected items from his personal collection of Brandeis memorabilia.  Brandeis was one of the leading lawyers and appellate advocates of his day and a champion of the American Zionist movement when appointed to the Supreme Court in 1916.  His legacy there in respect of free speech, privacy, judicial restraint, and federalism is important to this day.

About the Speaker:

Frank Sullivan, Jr., is Professor of Practice at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law where he teaches courses in business and commercial law. He joined the faculty in the Fall Semester, 2012, after almost 19 years of service as a Justice of the Indiana Supreme Court. His tenure ranks 9th longest among the 108 men and women who have served as justices of the Indiana Supreme Court.

While on the Supreme Court, Sullivan authored approximately 500 majority opinions ad-dressing a wide range of criminal, civil, and tax law issues. He was also active in the Court’s administrative work, including leading a statewide effort to equip all Indiana courts with modern technology.

Sullivan is an admirer of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis who served on the high court from 1916 to 1939 and Sullivan and his wife own a small collection of Brandeis artifacts, memorabilia, and books.
Sullivan served as Indiana State Budget Director for Governor Evan Bayh and practiced corporate law in Indianapolis. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the Indiana University Maurer School of Law and holds an LL.M. from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Parking is available for a nominal fee at the campus Gateway Garage, located on the corner of Michigan and California Streets (Address is 525 Blackford Street).

Parking is also available for a nominal fee at the Natatorium Garage two blocks west of the law school.
