Professor Gary R. Roberts served as Dean of IU McKinney School of Law from the summer of 2007 until the summer of 2013. He graduated at the top of his law school class at Stanford Law School and then clerked for the Honorable Ben C. Duniway on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in San Francisco before entering private practice at the firm of Covington and Burling in Washington, D.C., where he engaged in antitrust, sports, labor, contract, and trademark litigation. He was admitted to the bar in California (1975) and the District of Columbia (1976), as well as the U.S. Supreme Court (1978) and five courts of appeal.
Before coming to IU, he was a faculty member at Tulane University Law School for 24 years, where he directed the Sports Law Program, served as Vice Dean for Academic Affairs from 1990-95, and became Deputy Dean in 2001.
He has taught sports law, antitrust, labor law, and business enterprises. A recognized expert in sports law, he has published several articles and book chapters on antitrust, labor, and other issues in the sports industry, and has co-authored the leading casebook on sports law. Dean Roberts has served as president of the Sports Lawyers Association and as chairman of the AALS Sports Law Section. He is currently an officer and board member of The Sports Lawyers Association and is editor-in-chief of its monthly on-line newsletter, The Sports Lawyer. He has served for many years on committees for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), including the Academics, Eligibility & Compliance Cabinet (2004 - 2007) and the Student Review Group (2006 - 2007). Dean Roberts is a certified commercial and sports arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association (2005 - present). He is also a founding member and member of the board of directors for the International Association of Sports Professionals and Executives (2004 - present).
