Richard E. Humphrey joined the law library faculty in 1995. He began his law library career in 1980 as Assistant to the Director of the Jefferson County Public Law Library, Louisville, KY, where he served until 1986, when he was employed by the Cincinnati Law Library Association as Head of Circulation. In 1992, he was hired as Public Services Coordinator of the Athenaeum of Ohio/Mount St. Mary's Seminary Library in Cincinnati, OH, where he served until joining the library faculty at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.

Along with his full-time experience, he was also part-time law librarian for the Cincinnati firms of Steer, Strauss, White and Tobias from 1986-1992, Clark and Eyrich from 1992-1993, and the Northern Kentucky office of Greenebaum, Doll, and McDonald from 1993-1995.

He taught courses in Legal Analysis, Research, and Communication (LARC) from 1996-2003. He has also taught courses in Law Librarianship and in Government Documents for the Indiana University Graduate Program in Library Science and has been a guest lecturer for courses in Medical Librarianship, also at Indiana University.

He is active in law library professional organizations at the state, regional, and national level, having served as President of the Ohio Regional Association of Law Libraries from 1999-2000, as editor of the American Association of Law Libraries newsletter on Relations with Information Vendors (CRIV Sheet) from 1997-2000, and as a frequent speaker and contributing author on law library related subjects.

His publications include "Biographical Sketches of Indiana Supreme Court Justices" (30 Ind. L. Rev. 328), co-authored with Minde Browning and Bruce Kleinschmidt, in conjunction with the Symposium on the History of Indiana Courts (1997), “Indiana Practice Materials: A Selective Annotated Bibliography” (Published in State Practice Materials: Annotated Bibliographies, Frank Houdek, editor. Buffalo, NY: William S. Hein & Co., Inc. (2004), and the chapter on Judge Willard B. Gemmill, in Justices of the Indiana Supreme Court , edited by Linda C. Gugin and James E. St. Clair, Indianapolis: Indiana Historical Society Press in cooperation with the Indiana Supreme Court (2010).

His law library duties include providing reference services and instruction, faculty liaison services, collection development, and library display design. He is also currently the faculty advisor to the Lambda Law Society.
