LL.M. Graduate's Story of Leaving Iraq Told by Local Media
Basim Najeeb, LL.M. '13, says he's lucky to be here.
By here, he means alive.
Najeeb's story of leaving his native Iraq following an attack by Iraqi militia that took place during a business meeting with a client is told in the current issue of The Criterion, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
During the attack, that took place seven years ago, Najeeb was shot in the stomach and his right thigh, and pretended to be dead until the attackers left. It was the impetus for him to flee the country with his family. Because Najeeb has a distant relative in Indianapolis, they chose to move here. The family was helped by Catholic Charities Indianapolis and their Refugee Resettlement Program. Najeeb now volunteers with the program.
