Professor Carrie Hagan to Present Research during Campus-wide Event

09/13/2013

IU McKinney Professor Carrie Hagan has been invited to participate in the IUPUI Center for Translating Research into Practice (TRIP) Community Showcase on September 16.

The event features several of the university’s faculty scholars who will present their research and illustrate how that research improves people’s lives. The event will feature a presentation by the inaugural Bantz-Petronio Translating Research into Practice Award recipient, Dr. David Marrero. Dr. Marrero will present on the topic “Practical Approaches to Preventing Diabetes: What Actually Works.”

Professor Hagan and Professor Stephanie Boys of the School of Social Work will present on the topic “Law and Social Work: Providing Holistic Services to Benefit Students, the University, and the Community.” They developed a new service learning opportunity through an interdisciplinary partnership between the schools of law and social work. The purpose of the project was to enhance the joint JD/MSW program, as well as the experiences of JD and MSW students. They redesigned a Civil Practice Clinic, which had formerly involved only law students, to now pair law students and social work students in order to serve the holistic needs of clients. Referrals for the clinic are obtained through Indiana Legal Services, and many clients do not have resources to retain legal counsel or services by other means. The law students address the clients’ legal issues and the social work students ensure the clients are connected with appropriate social services, such as domestic violence counseling and social welfare benefits.

Professor Hagan is a clinical associate professor of law, who joined the faculty in 2009. She teaches in the Civil Practice Clinic and also teaches the school’s Lawyering Practice class.

The showcase event begins at 5 p.m. on September 16 in room 450 of the IUPUI Campus Center. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested.
