IU McKinney Professor and Alumnae Speak at Zinn Read-In November 4

A faculty member and two alumnae took part in the November 4 Zinn Read-In at Democracy Plaza on the IUPUI Campus. It was part of a nationwide effort on the part of scholars and activists to honor historian Howard Zinn.

Professor Florence Wagman Roisman of IU McKinney, and alumnae Shelia Seuss Kennedy, ’75, and Suzann Lupton, ’91, took part in reading from Zinn’s work and speaking about its impact. The impetus for the event came in 2010 when Mitch Daniels, then governor of Indiana and now president of Purdue University, tried to prevent Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States from being discussed in Indiana schools.

The read-in events were meant to be a commemoration of academic freedom and a declaration against censorship. Organizers of the event on the IUPUI campus collected copies of Zinn’s work to deliver to local high schools.
