Professor Emily Benfer, '05, Receives Inaugural Schweitzer Leadership Award
Professor Emily Benfer, ’05, a cum laude graduate of IU McKinney, has received the inaugural Schweitzer Leadership Award. The award honors an individual who has done significant work to mitigate the social determinants of health in their community, and whose commitment to service has influenced and inspired others. The honor comes with a $1,000 cash prize. Benfer will receive the award at a reception February 27.
Benfer received high praise from her academic colleagues in a blog post by the Department of Public Health Sciences, part of the Loyola University of Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, a program familiar with Benfer’s work as the founder and director of the Health Justice Project at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
Benfer is a clinical professor of law at Loyola. The clinic is a medical-legal partnership, where law students work with social work students, attorneys, and health-care providers to identify social and legal problems that negatively impact the health of low-income patients, and take the necessary steps to resolve them. The clinic has helped 1,200 clients since its beginning in 2010.
