Jimmie McMillian, '02, to Receive Award from Madame Walker Theatre Center
Jimmie McMillian, ’02, a partner in the Indianapolis office of law firm Barnes & Thornburg, will receive the “Legacy Award” from the Madame Walker Theatre Center during its annual Spirit Awards Gala on April 26.
McMillian has served for three years on the center’s board of directors, and the award presentation honors his service to the organization. The center’s mission is to preserve and advance Madame C.J. Walker’s legacy through arts, entertainment, cultural education, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement. Madame Walker, born Sarah Breedlove in 1867, was an entrepreneur and philanthropist, regarded as the first female self-made millionaire in the United States.
It’s one of several recognitions for service McMillian has received. He was honored with the Maynard K. Hine Medal for service to the IUPUI campus in 2013. Among other honors, he has received the National Bar Association’s Presidential Award in 2007, his law firm’s Pro Bono Attorney of the Year award, and the Honorable Carr L. Darden Leadership Award.
McMillian was president of the law school’s alumni association in 2011-2012, and served as president of the Neal-Marshall Indiana University Alumni Association in 2013. While in law school, he served as a barrister of the Moot Court Team and was a member of the Trial Advocacy Team. He served as a law clerk to then-Justice Frank Sullivan, Jr., from 2002-2004.
