IU McKinney Alumna Named to NLJ 40 Under 40 for Chicago
Emily Benfer, ’05, Clinical Professor of Law and Director of the Health Justice Project at Loyola University Chicago School of Law, has been named one of Chicago’s Rising Stars in the latest issue of The National Law Journal (NLJ).
Benfer, a cum laude graduate of IU McKinney, was named to the NLJ’s 40 under 40 list for Chicago in recognition of her work in creating a health law clinic at Loyola. In this medical-legal partnership, law students work with social work students, attorneys, and health-care providers to identify social and legal problems that negatively impact the health of low-income patients, and take the necessary steps to resolve them. The clinic has helped 1,200 clients since its beginning in 2010.
While a student at IU McKinney, Benfer was an editor for the Indiana International & Comparative Law Review, president of the local and national chapters of Equal Justice Works, and clerked for Judge David Hamilton, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, the Indiana Protective Order Pro Bono Project, and the Washington Legal Clinic for the Homeless.
