Professor Roisman to Receive Human Rights Award

07/24/2013

IU McKinney Professor Florence Wagman Roisman will receive the M. Shanara Gilbert Human Rights Award from the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT). She will be given the award during the group’s annual dinner in New York City in January 2014.

“The entire law school is proud of Professor Roisman,” said Dean Andy Klein. “We are fortunate to have someone as part of our community who has spent a remarkable career advocating to make the lives of others better.”

The human rights award has been given periodically since it was first established in 1997, awarded only when an outstanding candidate is identified.

“I am very grateful to the colleagues who nominated me and to SALT,” Professor Roisman said. “I think this recognition honors all who have tried to make the human right to decent housing a reality in the United States and elsewhere.”

The award is named for M. Shanara Gilbert, a CUNY Law School professor who “dedicated her life to equality, equity, and justice,” according to the SALT website. Prior honorees include Congressman John Lewis, Bryan Stevenson, and David Cole and the Center for Constitutional Rights.
