Sun Yat-sen University Law School Summer Program in American Law

Each year in late June and early July, the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law hosts a ten-day Summer Program in American Law for law students and professors from Sun Yat-sen University Law School. The Summer Program is a partnership of the two law schools that began in 2012. The program consists of classroom instruction by distinguished IU McKinney School of Law professors, law-related field trips, and cultural experiences. Classroom instruction is designed to enable Program participants to understand foundational concepts of American law and to see those concepts at work in issues and cases in daily news headlines. The Summer Program Director is Professor Lloyd T. Wilson, Jr.
Summer Program Curriculum

Law-Related Field Trips
In addition to classroom lectures and discussions, each student’s learning experience is enriched through a series of field trips to such destinations as:
- Indiana Supreme Court
- U.S. District Court
- Marion County Circuit Court
- Indiana Senate
- Indiana House of Representatives
- Indiana Lieutenant Governor
- Indiana Attorney General
- Indiana Secretary of State
- Faegre Baker & Daniels Law Firm
Instruction is in English. Most lectures are delivered on weekday mornings. Law-related field trips occur during weekday afternoons. Cultural field trips occur at various times during the week and on weekends. Course topics, sequence of courses, and field trip destinations are subject to final determination by the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and Sun Yat-sen University Law School.
Sightseeing and Cultural Activities
The program includes memorable sightseeing excursions to such destinations as:
- Celebrate Independence Day with Fireworks
- Attend an Indianapolis Indians Baseball Game
- Tour of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
- Tour of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art
- Tour of the Indiana Historical Society Museum
- Attend the Taste of Indianapolis Festival
- Attend the Friday Food Truck Festival
- Attend Concerts on the Downtown Canal, with Dancing Lessons
- Shopping Excursion to the Edinburgh Outlet Mall
Students have ample time during afternoons, evenings, and weekends to explore Indianapolis, walk its streets, shop in its markets and modern stores, and experience its active night life.
Accommodations for Program participants are provided at Riverwalk Apartments on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. Located close to the downtown canal, the White River State Park, the Indianapolis Zoo, and several museums, these apartments are the ideal setting for Summer Program participants.
Each apartment includes three areas:
- Two or more bedrooms, each with a full-size bed, desk, chair, and dresser
- A living room, with a sofa, chair, entertainment center, end tables, dinette table with chairs
- Fully furnished kitchen, with a refrigerator, oven/range, full-size washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave
Breakfast and lunch are provided during class days. The Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law is located near many restaurants, and transportation to a local grocery store can be arranged.
A farewell ceremony and dinner are held at the conclusion
of the program.
