M.J. Program Tuition and Fees
Tuition is assessed per credit hour. The per credit hour rate for Indiana residents for the 2025-2026 academic year is $1,028, the rate for non-residents is $1,655, and the Indiana partner rate is $1,542. The only mandatory fee is a student services fee assessed by campus.
M.J. students are permitted to pursue part-time or full-time studies and have up to 4 academic years to complete the degree. Total tuition and charges will be based on how many credits you take during the semester.
IU Online charges a $40 per credit hour registration fee for online courses, in addition to tuition and fees already charged for courses at McKinney.
Indiana Partner Tuition: States participating in the Midwest Student Exchange Program (Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and Wisconsin), as well as Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, and Puerto Rico. For more information, visit Indiana Partner Tuition.
International Students
International M.J. students who join IU McKinney on a student visa (F-1 or J-1) will be required to take minimum of 8 credits per semester.
Current tuition and fees for the M.J. program (30 credits) at IU McKinney Law are as follows:
- Tuition: $49,650 ($1,625 per credit hour-30 credits)
- Mandatory fees (for entire program): $1,614*
- Books and supplies (estimate): $1,250*
- Housing and living expenses (estimated for 9 months): $15,926 or $21,235 (estimated for 12 months)*
- Health insurance (mandatory for foreign students): $1,843
Total cost including tuition, housing, living expenses, travel, etc.: $71,783 ($77,017 for 12 months)
*These figures are based on Office of International Affairs estimates and are used to provide the amount of support you will need to document in order to secure a visa, if you should require a student visa. $8,568 of additional funds will need to be documented for any dependents (spouse or child) who will be traveling with you to Indianapolis.
All the above figures are unofficial and subject to change; the official tuition and fee rates are available from the Bursar's Office or from the Office of International Affairs. For visa purposes, you will need complete the Financial Support Agreement, to document that you will be able to support yourself during your studies. If you have more than one sponsor, please have each one complete a form.
Scholarships
To demonstrate the law school's commitment to the M.J. program and to make it more accessible for qualified students, IU McKinney provides scholarship assistance to those who have a demonstrated financial need or outstanding academic/professional credentials. Detailed information on applying for scholarship assistance is included on our application.
International students are encouraged to seek out scholarship and grant opportunities through their government, employer, the U.S. government, and private foundations in the U.S. and abroad. Suggested scholarships to research are scholarships through the Fulbright Program, the Edmund S. Muskie / Freedom Support Act Graduate Fellowship Program, Ford Foundation, and Open Society Institute.
Employer Tuition Assistance
Many employers recognize the value of investing in their employees’ education because of the mutual benefits. This may help to reduce or offset the cost of tuition during your studies. Additional criteria may be required to determine eligibility. Connect with your supervisor or human resource department to find out more.
State of Indiana Employees Scholarship Information
State employees will receive a $2,000 scholarship if they are admitted to the Master of Jurisprudence (M.J.) program. Additional funding may be available when applying. Please contact Elise Seidel at mjlaw@iu.edu for details.

Loans
U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for loans through the federal government. Filing annually the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form is required.
