How to Create a Scholarship

Three ways scholarships make a difference for IU McKinney students and for our law school:

#1Reduce educational debt

#2Attract and retain excellent students

#3Ensure IU McKinney Law remains financially accessible

Here's How You Make It Happen:

How to Structure an Endowed Scholarship
  • Establish an endowed scholarship for students.
  • Name a scholarship for you and a spouse, your family, or someone important to you.
  • Work together with you and the Indiana University Foundation to create a gift agreement that includes the name of the scholarship and details about your funding arrangements.
Ways to Fund an Endowed Scholarship

The minimum to start a permanently endowed scholarship at IU McKinney Law is $50,000, which would result in an annual award of approximately $2,250 based on an endowment spending policy of 4.5%. This can be accomplished in several ways:

  • Make an outright gift or make a pledge and pay the amount over five years using cash, appreciated securities, or other property (which may have capital gains tax savings).
  • Direct charitable distributions from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) if you are age 70 ½ or older.
  • Document a planned gift or a combination of an outright and planned gift.
Staying in Touch with You about the Scholarship and Recipients
  • Receive an annual report from the IU Foundation about the investment performance of the endowment you created.
  • Learn more about the student recipient, including a thank you letter and resume, as we will send you this information annually.
  • Meet the recipient of your scholarship at the school’s annual Scholarship Brunch or meet them individually if you prefer.
