Program on Law & State Government

If you want to experience the confluence of law, lawyering and governance, participating with the Program on Law and State Government will give you the knowledge base you need.

The Program sponsors a wide variety of externship placements, within the executive and legislative branches of Indiana's state government, including the Office of the Governor, the Indiana Attorney General, the Indiana State Police, the Civil Rights Commission and over fifty others.  These externships will introduce you to new vantage points on what it means to be a public lawyer, how the private regulated community engages with Indiana's state government, and how federal and state tax dollars translate into programs for Hoosiers.  In the fall and spring semesters, the required one-credit classroom component of the course provides additional opportunities to learn about the law, process, and policies of Indiana's and other state governments. Students may also enroll in summer and advanced externships.

The Program also supports student interest in contemporary scholarship of legal issues facing state governments.   Through doctrinal courses, advanced field research, advanced course related experiences, advanced research and writing requirements, and directed reading opportunities, the Program provides support for unique student collaboration with lawyers, scholars, and policy makers.
