Do. Reflect. Learn.
Externships are one way that law students can satisfy IU McKinney’s experiential learning requirement. In externship courses, law students, faculty advisors, and supervising lawyers and judges work together to advance law students’ understanding of law and the practice of law. IU McKinney offers over 100 externship placements in a wide variety of practice areas: criminal, corporate, health, and government.
Students must have a GPA of 2.3 on a 4.0 scale and be in good academic standing to be eligible to participate in an externship.
Do. Externships allow students to integrate doctrine, theory, skills, and legal ethics as students do all kinds of legal work over the course of the semester under the supervision of a lawyer or judge.
Reflect. With meaningful feedback and guidance from the supervising lawyer and faculty advisor for externships, students are able to engage in self-evaluation of their professional development, the practice of law, and their goals for their role in the legal profession.
Learn. Externships provide a place, an academic structure, and a set of professional relationships to help students learn about the law and the practice of law in a real-world setting.
