Reception: 6:00-7:00 p.m.
Topic:
Professor James White was a leader in legal education for half a century, including serving for over 25 years as the Consultant on Legal Education to the American Bar Association. In that role, he was the principal architect of many of the features that continue to define legal education. In this lecture honoring his legacy, Dean Testy will offer an overview of the current challenges to legal education and offer reflections on how Professor White's approach in an earlier era might offer wisdom for today. Some of the topics covered include challenges to the ABA's accrediting authority; federal curtailment of student financial aid; state and federal legislation and other actions that are aimed at reducing the shared governance traditions and autonomy of universities; calls for greater "practice readiness" of new lawyers; and the widening access to justice gap experienced by many individuals who need legal assistance for critical matters.

CEO of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS), which serves as the institutional membership organization for its 175 member law schools and as the learned society for the legal academy.

Testy served as dean and professor of law at the University of Washington School of Law from 2009 to 2017 and at Seattle University School of Law from 2005 to 2009. She began her career as a law professor at the University of Puget Sound in 1992, which then became Seattle University. As a professor, Testy was an award-winning teacher and an insightful scholar who brought an equity lens to her focus on business and corporate law. Her areas of expertise include leadership, business and corporate law, gender and the law, and legal education. Testy earned her undergraduate degree in journalism from Indiana University in Bloomington, and her law degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law—Bloomington.
