Speaker: Dr. Ruth Reichard, Ph.D., American History, Indiana University (2015), J.D., Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law (1985)
Topic: Capital and Commodification: Law and the AIDS Crisis
Dr. Reichard will discuss the role of the courts during the first two decades of the HIV-AIDS pandemic, including how “blood shield” statutes foreclosed the recovery of damages for people infected via transfusions and commercial blood products. Dr. Reichard’s forthcoming book, Blood and Steel: How AIDS and Deindustrialization Divided a Community, tells the story of internationally famous AIDS victim Ryan White, who was infected through blood treatments, and his hometown of Kokomo, Indiana.
