Master of Laws and Juris Doctor students at IU McKinney formed the Pro Bono United Nations Human Rights Reporting Organization during the commemoration of International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2016.
Elected officers are LL.M. student Swati Pradeep as president; 1L Kayla Hill as vice president and membership outreach officer; 1L Yeonjee Lee as vice president and treasurer; LL.M. student Aron Okubaldet as secretary; and LL.M. student Aline Fagundes as an honorary board member. These students also will serve as the board of trustees. In the photo from left are Fagundes, Lee, Okubaldet, Pradeep, and Hill.
“We are glad to have such an organization that will have an impact on the monitoring by UN treaty bodies of the compliance by states parties of their human rights treaty obligations,” Pradeep said. “The basic purpose of our organization is to review the periodic reports of states’ parties and to participate in coalition-building with United Nations-focused groups in the United States. This organization is all-inclusive and we look forward to welcoming the involvement of all the students at McKinney and IUPUI.”
The group chose Professor Fran Quigley, ’86, as faculty supervisor for their UN human rights reporting projects, and elected Perfecto “Boyet” Caparas, LL.M. ’05, associate director of graduate programs, as advisor.
