Professor Fran Quigley, IU McKinney Students, File Amicus Brief in Case Against United Nations
10/20/2014
Professor Fran Quigley and students of the IU McKinney Health and Human Rights Clinic filed an amicus brief in the case Delama Georges et al., v. United Nations et al.
Life was made infinitely worse for the people of Haiti after the earthquake that devastated the nation in 2010 when a cholera epidemic broke out, killing more than 8,600 people and sickening over a half million others. The particular strain of cholera that spread through the nation was traced to Nepal, where some United Nations operatives were based before being sent to Haiti.
Professor Quigley and the students filed the brief in May 2014. Quigley talked about the cholera outbreak and the critical work being done for human rights in Haiti during his talk about his latest book, How Human Rights Can Build Haiti, on October 14 at the law school. The book was published by Vanderbilt University Press earlier this year.
Professor Quigley, ’87, is a clinical professor of law, teaching in the Health and Human Rights Clinic. Clinic students advocate for rights on behalf of the poor, and have a special focus on representing low-wage workers.
