Brittany Simmerman, '14, Named To Washburn University Athletics Staff
10/24/2014
Brittany Simmerman has been named assistant athletic director and senior women’s administrator at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.
The 2014 graduate of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law was an extern at the NCAA in enforcement, where she processed secondary violations from Division I, II, and III schools. She also was a compliance extern at the IUPUI athletic department where she worked with student athletes and the NCAA Eligibility Center helping to monitor 16 NCAA Division I sports.
“My journey through law school was perhaps a bit unusual because I didn't enter law school with a set career goal in mind,” Simmerman said. “The epiphany for me came after taking then-Dean Gary Roberts’ ‘Professional Sports and the Law’ class my first semester of 2L year. I very quickly realized that I could take my love of athletics, my desire to work at an institution of higher education, and my legal education and combine those things into a career that I would enjoy,” she said.
An athlete during her undergraduate studies, Simmerman was a three-time captain of the soccer team at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, where she graduated summa cum laude.
While working as a law clerk for Adair W. Brent, she also externed with USA Football drafting and executing licensing and facility agreements for USA Football camps across the national as well as helping to review and create sponsorship agreements for the U.S. National team events and USA Football Organization. She remained with the organization for four months after graduation from law school.
“This job is one that most people would typically not associate with the legal profession, but I cannot imagine attempting to tackle such a big position without the education McKinney provided,” Simmerman said.
