Professor Joel Schumm Presented with State Bar's Public Service Award
10/17/2014
Professor Joel Schumm, ’98, was presented with the Indiana State Bar Association’s David Hamacher Public Service Award, which is sponsored by the Appellate Practice Section. The award was presented to him during the awards luncheon October 16, which takes place during the association’s annual meeting.
Describing Professor Schumm as “an Indiana treasure,” he was presented the award not only for “being a model appellate practitioner in his own right,” but also “producing the next generation of appellate practitioners in his Appellate Law Clinic at the IU McKinney School of Law.” Those who nominated Professor Schumm for the honor noted that he is a ready resource to the entire criminal appellate practice bar and is often the “go to expert” on a wide range of legal issues for general interest media.
Professor Schumm also received a Presidential Citation from outgoing bar president Jim Dimos. The citation was for Professor Schumm’s work as co-chair of the bar’s Written Publications Committee, the articles he’s written for “Res Gestae,” and the continuing legal education panels he takes part in. Of particular note was his work on the state bar’s House Joint Resolution 3 Special Committee.
Professor Schumm is a magna cum laude graduate of the law school. He is a clinical professor of law, where he teaches in the Appellate Clinic, director of the Judicial Externship Program, and director of Experiential Learning.
