IU McKinney and Bradley University Create Partnership
11/12/2014
A partnership between the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law and Bradley University has created the “Bradley Law Scholar” program, and the first two students to hold this title will begin their legal educations in Fall 2015.
Each year, Bradley will nominate two students or alumni for admission to IU McKinney, following nomination procedures outlined by the university.
“I am extremely proud to be undertaking a partnership with Bradley University,” said IU McKinney Dean Andrew R. Klein. “The law school has a strong connection with Bradley through Dean Emeritus Gary Roberts, who is an engaged alum of his alma mater. We look forward to welcoming more Bradley grads to our community in the years ahead.”
Bradley Provost David Glassman says Bradley University is committed to assisting students interested in a law career as they make plans for post-graduate education. “This partnership creates a pipeline to a prestigious institution in IU’s McKinney School of Law.”
Applicants must be nominated by Bradley, and the university’s representatives will review academic performance, letters of recommendations, volunteer and leadership experience, and areas of interest in the legal profession. Fellows will receive a minimum of a half-tuition scholarship, will be designated a program fellow in the student’s chosen area of study with a chance to meet with faculty during the first semester for help in determining a course of study should the student wish to seek that kind of guidance, paid employment as a research assistant after completing 30 hours of law school, and guaranteed experiential learning opportunities. Nomination deadline is February 1, 2015.
“I am delighted that my undergraduate alma mater and the McKinney School of Law have established this terrific relationship that will be of benefit to both schools in attracting the best and the brightest,” said Dean Emeritus and Professor of Law Gary Roberts. “Bradley is a truly wonderful school that has outstanding students (e.g., its speech teams have won 40 national collegiate speech championships in the last five decades), and we are fortunate to have this pipeline that brings some of them here to the McKinney School of Law and Indianapolis.”
According to Nicole Meyer, Director of Bradley’s Pre-Law Center, this fellowship means that the Bradley Law Scholars will be presented with guaranteed, hands-on legal experience before other students. “This is crucial in the current legal profession because many law school graduates don’t have the opportunity to receive real experience before they acquire a job. As a result, Bradley Law Scholars will be more marketable to future employers. This opportunity is a continuum of the experiential learning opportunities offered at Bradley.”
