Students form Islamic Law Association
01/28/2015
Doctor of Juridical Science and Master of Laws students recently formed the Islamic Law Association (ILA) to “[p]romote multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual cooperation and understanding” among members of “the larger law school community,” according to the group’s bylaws.
ILA aims to demonstrate and represent the meaning and practice of Islamic Law (Sharey’ah). It also aspires to help members “achieve experiential legal career and professional development and growth.” ILA hopes to provide members with “opportunities for getting published in peer-reviewed journals, gaining optional practical training placements, and similar opportunities.”
It plans to boost “members’ leadership and professional legal skills, including public speaking, legal writing, management, and networking.” ILA seeks “practical legal learning opportunities such as externship, shadowing an attorney, pro bono educational legal services, and similar programs.”
ILA accepts students from the JD, LLM, SJD, and Master of Jurisprudence programs as members, per its “policy of Musawah (equality), inclusion and diversity.”
The group held their first meeting on January 29.
