04/07/2015
Former United States Ambassador to Costa Rica Anne Slaughter Andrew, ’83, will present the commencement address during the ceremony for graduates of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law on May 9.
Andrew was appointed to the ambassadorship in 2009, a post she held until July 2013. During her time leading the embassy in San Jose, she directed more than $50 million in development and security program funding, led regional clean energy initiatives, and oversaw the expansion of U.S. exports to Costa Rica by more than 20 percent.
She began her legal career in the Indianapolis law firm Faegre Baker Daniels, where she was a partner and co-chair of the environmental/energy practice team. After that she joined Patton Boggs as a partner in that law firm’s environment and energy group. She led collaborative efforts at the state and national level to advance regulatory reform, including state and national models for Brownfield redevelopment and for the Clean Air Act National Model Permits.
An entrepreneur in addition to being a lawyer, Andrew is a founding partner of New Energy Nexus, LLC, a clean energy consulting company. She also has extensive experience with not-for-profit and political organizations, including the Sierra Club and the Clean Economy Network, now known as Advanced Energy Economy. Andrew was affiliated with the Nature Conservancy for ten years, and served as special counsel, director of the office of the president, as a member of the president’s advisory council, and as a trustee and executive committee member of the Indiana Chapter.
IU McKinney’s commencement ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. in the Indiana Convention Center’s Sagamore Ballroom.
