05/01/2015
Professor Joel Schumm, ’98, is among the eight candidates who want to be considered for appointment to the Indiana Court of Appeals. A replacement is needed for Judge Ezra Friedlander when he retires in August.
Professor Schumm is a magna cum laude graduate of IU McKinney. He is a clinical professor of law, teaches in the appellate practice clinic, and is director of experiential learning. He was a semifinalist for the Indiana Court of Appeals when Judge Carr Darden, ’70, retired in 2012.
Other IU McKinney alumni who also want to be considered for the post include:
- Bryan L. Ciyou, ’94, Ciyou & Dixon
- Stephen R. Creason, ’00, Indiana Attorney General’s Office
- Judge Gary L. Miller, ’80, Marion Superior Court. Judge Miller also teaches as an adjunct professor at IU McKinney.
- David L. Pippen, ‘94 Bose McKinney & Evans
Judge Friedlander’s replacement will be selected by Governor Mike Pence, ’86, following interviews with the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission. The commission sends the governor three finalists from which he’ll make the appointment.
