Professor Schumm, '98, to Represent Woman Convicted in Neglect Case

Professor Joel Schumm, ’98, has filed to represent the South Bend woman convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison in a child neglect and feticide case.
Purvi Patel was convicted of child neglect and feticide in March. Professor Lawrence Marshall of Stanford is leading Patel’s appellate team, while Professor Schumm will serve as co-counsel. A story on the development in the case was published April 30 in the South Bend Tribune.
Professor Schumm is a magna cum laude graduate of the law school. He is a clinical professor of law, where he teaches in the Appellate Clinic, director of the Judicial Externship Program, and director of Experiential Learning.
