Dean Bravo Spearheads Campus Diversity and Leadership Initiative with Colleagues from IU McKinney, Liberal Arts, and Office for Women
06/05/2015
IU McKinney Associate Dean Prof. Karen Bravo, (in the photo at left) together with her colleague Gina Sanchez Gibau, associate dean for student affairs in liberal arts, spearheaded the creation of IUPUI’s Next Generation 2.0 program, a new leadership and professional development initiative for IUPUI faculty and staff.
“Next Generation 2.0 represents a commitment by the IUPUI campus to nurturing and empowering women and minority faculty and staff leaders, and for bridging potential divides among schools and among personnel of different ranks," said Dean Bravo.
After participating in the 2013 Higher Education Resource Services Bryn Mawr Summer Institute and consulting with interested stakeholders, Bravo and Gibau collaborated with Kathy Grove, ’77, director of the IUPUI Office for Women to advocate for the renewal and expansion of an earlier, successful IUPUI leadership program.
In keeping with the IUPUI Strategic Plan and goals to retain and develop a diverse pool of talent to lead the institution into the future, IUPUI Next Generation 2.0 will prepare women and underrepresented minority faculty and staff for positions of leadership and opportunities for advancement at IUPUI and in higher education. Participants will complete a yearlong curriculum that will prepare them to step into and/or create such opportunities in their units and schools. The program begins in August 2015 and will conclude in May 2016.
IUPUI Next Generation 2.0 builds upon the successes of Next Generation @ IUPUI, a 2009 IUPUI faculty leadership program. That grant-funded yearlong program was designed to provide an avenue to expand the pool of underrepresented minority faculty ready to assume leadership positions at IUPUI.
“Each month during the program, members of the cohort will meet for a day with outstanding faculty to examine topics of relevance to today’s higher education leader," said Dean Bravo.
“Some of the topics to be studied include: organizational structure in higher education; planning and leading change; financial planning and budgeting; leadership development; conflict management and negotiation; diversity; and professional development," said Gibau. “The selection for this program is a significant achievement for the participants,” said Grove, “Our applicant pool was quite strong, and the selection process was rigorous. Of the 59 applications received, 20 participants representing a wide range of units from IUPUI and IUPUC were selected.”
Other law school personnel are integrally involved in the initiative: Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, Johnny Pryor, and Assistant Dean for the Office of Professional Development, Chasity Thompson, ’02, serve on the Next Generation 2.0 advisory board. Chancellor Emeritus Gerald Bepko is one of the eminent faculty leaders participating. Professor Shawn Boyne, co-chair of the Global Crisis Leadership Forum, is a member of the 2015-16 cohort.
