IU McKinney Student Spending Summer in Estonia with Law Firm
06/29/2015
IU McKinney J.D. student John Phillip Miller is working as an extern at the law firm Sorainen in Tallinn, Estonia, during Summer 2015.
Interested in international law as it applies to business, Miller said he was initially a little concerned that he wouldn’t have anything meaningful to do at the firm. That’s turned out to not be the case. He talked with Professor Frank Emmert about his wish to gain some experience working at a law firm during the summer. Professor Emmert put Miller in touch with Sorainen.
Sorainen just celebrated its 20th anniversary, and has branches in Latvia, Lithuania and Belarus, in addition to Estonia, and Miller is working there on what the firm refers to as a “summer traineeship.” Miller has been working with the firm’s dispute resolution team, and has been working with European Union law and a lot of arbitration.
“I have been lucky enough to work in a place where I can simultaneously learn from the examples of the partners and associates,” Miller said. “I have very much been in control of making the traineeship what I wanted it to be; namely, an opportunity to get as much practical experience for my later career as possible.”
