International Law Students "Shadow" Corporate Attorneys
07/15/2015
The Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law kicked off its “shadow-an-attorney” initiative recently with international students conferring with two attorneys from Closure Systems International Inc. (CSI).
“The ‘shadow-an-attorney’ initiative offers opportunities for the law school to partner with the legal community, thereby providing meaningful interactions, learning settings, and insights to our international students,” said Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and International Affairs Karen E. Bravo. “This creates a win-win-win opportunity for the law school, the legal community, and the students.”
CSI deputy general counsel Mary F. Wyman, ’06, and her colleague Stephanie Blackman, shared their legal experiences with McKinney’s Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.), Master of Laws (LL.M.) and Master of Jurisprudence (M.J.) students at CSI’s global headquarters in Zionsville, Indiana.
“Closure Systems International has manufacturing facilities around the globe, and the students were engaged and eager to learn about CSI, its international footprint, and how we, as in-house counsel, deal with the day-to-day issues that arise,” Wyman said.
Fabiana Morette Lattea, LL.M. ’12, who serves as CSI in-house counsel, facilitated the students’ meeting with her CSI colleagues.
Duong Vu, M.J. ’15, said she appreciated the opportunity to meet and talk with Wyman and Blackman. “They gave us valuable advice and talked about their career paths, including how they ended up as in-house counsel,” Vu said.
“Their working experiences gave me an insight to understand how in-house attorneys manage multiple tasks and handle multinational transactions in a complex international legal world,” said Sadia Maqsood, LL.M. ’15.
Ngoc Tran, LL.M. ’15, also appreciated the opportunity to meet with working lawyers. “It was a great opportunity for us to hear first-hand experiences from in-house counsels,” she said.
S.J.D. candidate Omar Alsunaid also appreciated meeting with practitioners in corporate law. “Meeting with in-house counsels is important to understand the ideal lawyer model that large corporations are looking to hire,” said Alsunaid.
The C.S.I. lawyers appreciated the chance to meet with the students, as well.
“Hopefully, our experiences, both locally and globally, will provide a useful perspective to the students,” Wyman said. “Good luck to each of them as they graduate and continue their careers.”
Attorneys interested in participating in the shadow-an-attorney day initiative may contact Perfecto “Boyet” Caparas, McKinney’s graduate studies and international affairs program manager, at pcaparas@iu.edu.
