Islamic Law Association Reaches Out to Fellow Law Students at IU McKinney, Publishes Inaugural Edition of Magazine
09/14/2015
Students who organized IU McKinney’s Islamic Law Association (ILA), founded in Spring 2015, have been busy reaching out to students, faculty and staff at the law school, hosting events and sharing their scholarship and their traditions from their home countries. The group produced its first magazine, published in early September 2015, to further their intention of sharing with the law school community the meaning and practice of Islamic Law. The magazine contains stories from ILA members regarding their scholarship, celebrates their recognition as “Best New Student Organization” and “Outstanding Advisor of the Year” from the law school’s Office of Student Affairs, and highlights their upcoming events. In the photo from left are Dean Andrew Klein, ILA treasurer Alhadi Altower, ILA president Omar Alsunaid, ILA vice president Rakan Alharbi, and advisor Perfecto 'Boyet' Caparas.
ILA aims to demonstrate and represent the meaning and practice of Islamic Law (Sharey’ah). It also aspires to help members “achieve experiential legal career and professional development and growth.” ILA hopes to provide members with “opportunities for getting published in peer-reviewed journals, gaining optional practical training placements, and similar opportunities.”
It plans to boost members’ leadership and professional legal skills, including public speaking, legal writing, management, and networking. ILA took part in IU McKinney’s Diversity Days in February 2015, serving the law school community food from their home countries while wearing traditional dress. The group also hosted monthly coffee hours open to all students, and welcomed questions about Islamic Law.
ILA accepts students from the J.D., LL.M., S.J.D., and Master of Jurisprudence programs as members, per its “policy of Musawah (equality), inclusion and diversity.”
ILA’s membership includes:
- Omar Alsunaid, President
- Rakan Alharbi, Vice President

- Alhadi Altower, Treasurer
- Bashar Almofadda, Public Relations Officer
- Siraj Bargawi, Student Bar Association Representative
