IU McKinney Hosts Symposium on Social Determinants of Health

The Indiana Health Law Review Symposium October 16 will take a look at social determinants of health at its annual event at IU McKinney School of Law.
Panel discussions throughout the day will examine prescription drug policy, interprofessional practice and education, and the role poverty plays on health, among other topics. Scholars and practitioners from the metropolitan Indianapolis area and across the country will share their experiences and expertise.
Professor Charity Scott of Georgia State University College of Law will present the keynote address titled “Interprofessional Collaboration in Public Health Law and Policy: Moving the Needle on Social Determinants of Health.” Her presentation, which begins the day’s event, will be moderated by Professor David Orentlicher, co-director of the Hall Center for Law and Health at IU McKinney.
The first panel will discuss the topic “Poverty, Health, and Justice: How Can Law Firms, Health Organizations, and Community Partners Collaborate to Influence Social Determinants of Heatlh?” Panelists for this discussion include Professor Ross Silverman of the IU Fairbanks School of Public Health; Anna Kirkman, associate counsel and medical-legal partnership director for Eskenazi Health; and Professor Elizabeth Tobin-Tyler of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Brown University School of Public Health. This panel will be moderated by Professor Fran Quigley, clinical professor of law at IU McKinney who teaches in the Health and Human Rights Clinic.
The day’s second panel discussion will focus on the topic “Advancing Public Health through Interprofessional Policy Advocacy: Not Just for Lobbyists Anymore.” Professor Bruce Jensson of the University of Southern California School of Social Work and Professor Peter Jacobson of the University of Michigan School of Public Health will speak. Their moderator will be Assistant Dean Chad Priest of the IU School of Nursing.
The luncheon address will be delivered by Dean Andrea Pfeifle, assistant dean and director of the IU Center for Interprofessional Health Education and Practice, and associate professor of family medicine. The moderator for her discussion will be Professor Nicolas Terry, executive director of the Hall Center for Law and Health at IU McKinney
The afternoon’s panel discussions kick off with the topic “Community Partnership: The Promise of Interprofessional Practice and Education.” The panelists will be Professor Micah Berman of the College of Public Health and Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University, and Professor Heather McCabe of the IU School of Social Work. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Sula Hood of the IU Fairbanks School of Public Heatlh.
The symposium concludes with a panel discussion of the topic “Prescription Drug Policy: A Case Study in Public Health Law and Policy.” Panelists will be Professor Eric Wright of Georgia State University School of Public Health, and Corey Davis of the National Health Law Program. This discussion will be moderated by Dean Joan Duwve of the IU Fairbanks School of Public Health. Dean Duwve also is chief medical officer of the Indiana State Department of Health.
