Judge Hamilton to Take Part in Panel Discussion on Individuals with Disabilities Education Act at IU McKinney
10/14/2015
In commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the legislation, IU McKinney will host a panel discussion of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) beginning at 1 p.m. on November 16 in the Inlow Hall Wynne Courtroom.
The measure, which was enacted by Congress in 1975, ensures that children with disabilities have the chance to receive a free appropriate public education just like other children. This is the law that provides children with disabilities the legal right to a special education.
Judge David F. Hamilton of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit; Dr. Robert Marra, former associate superintendent of the Indiana Department of Education’s Division of Exceptional Learners; Kevin McDowell, former general counsel of the Indiana Department of Education; Lauren Pena, Admissions Advisor at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law; Casandra L. Ringlespaugh, attorney at Cohen & Malad, LLP; and Theresa M. Willard, attorney at Plews Shadley Racher & Braun LLP and member of the Indiana Commission for Indiana Protection & Advocacy Services are among the confirmed speakers who will provide their perspectives on the legacy and operation of IDEA.
The special program is part of Professor Frank Sullivan, Jr.’s “Law and the Administration of Justice” class at the law school. The event, which is free and open to the public, carries with it 2.5 hours of CLE (pending approval) with a registration through the IU McKinney website.
