10/28/2015
A street in Lawrence has been named for retired Major General George Buskirk, ’75. The new neighborhood is being created on a large plat of land at the former Fort Benjamin Harrison. The street was named “Buskirk Drive” during a ceremony on September 29 in Lawrence.
Buskirk, left, is shown in the photo with Lawrence Mayor Dean Jessup.
Buskirk was in the Reserve Officer’s Training Corp as an undergraduate student at Butler University, and then came to IU McKinney for law school and was part of the evening division. He joined the National Guard in 1977, and served in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps. Appointed adjutant general of the State of Indiana by then-Governor Frank O'Bannon in 2001, Buskirk served until 2004.
“I’m so pleased to be recognized in this way by a great number of men that I served with,” Buskirk said. “I was thrilled to be called. It was a complete surprise. It’s a great honor to have been thought of so favorably; I spent the better part of 35 years in service.”
