Reception Celebrates Cohen & Malad, LLP Consumer Law Fellowship
08/28/2015
The Cohen & Malad, LLP Consumer Law Fellowship was celebrated with a reception at Inlow Hall on August 25. IU McKinney 3L Justin McGiffen is the fellowship’s first recipient.
Cohen & Malad, LLP, established the fellowship in 2013 to create an opportunity for students interested in consumer law to pursue research related to this area of law. The fellow works with the law school’s pro bono partner organizations or through the law school’s clinical programs to research topics in consumer law, mass torts, and class actions. The fellow also must plan and implement a symposium designed to educate the legal community about these issues. The inaugural event is scheduled for February 19, 2016.
"From a policy perspective, consumer law fascinates me because it seeks to strike a balance between establishing basic consumer rights while still maintaining a legal landscape conducive to economic growth,” McGriffen said. “This balance is struck by establishing standards of fair trade, competition, and accurate information in the marketplace. By removing the bad actors from the marketplace, consumer confidence swells and both consumers and honest businesses prosper.”
The Cohen & Malad Fellow works under the direct supervision of an attorney who is well versed in the area of law the student is interested in studying. Cheryl Koch-Martinez of Indiana Legal Services is the supervising attorney for this year’s fellow.
