Six IU McKinney Alumni Among Those Applying for Supreme Court

A total of six of the 30 people vying for the opportunity to succeed Justice Brent Dickson, ’68, are graduates of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. The first rounds of interviews with the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission will be February 17 through 19, with second interviews taking place March 3 through 4.
Among those under consideration are:
- David E. Cook, ’77, of the Indiana Alcohol & Tobacco Commission
- Judge Kit C. Crane, ’89, of Henry Circuit Court 2
- Judge Steven R. Nation, ’75, of Hamilton Superior Court 1
- Curtis E. Shirley, ’91, Indianapolis
- State Rep. Thomas W. Washburne, ’90, of Old National Bancorp
- Leanna K. Weissmann, ’94, of Lawrenceburg
Justice Dickson was elevated to the high court by then Governor Robert D. Orr in 1986, and he led the court as chief justice from 2012 to 2014. He has taught as an adjunct professor at IU McKinney many times, including the Fall semesters of 1993 and 1994, and the Spring semesters of 1996 through 1999. He was the recipient of the law school’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999.
Justice Dickson is one of three IU McKinney alumni who currently serve on the state’s high court. Justice Steven David, ‘82, was appointed in 2010. Justice Mark Massa, ‘89, was appointed in 2012.
