IU McKinney Annual McDonald-Merrill-Ketcham Award Lecture to Examine Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports
02/18/2016
Bans on the use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes and whether they are justified will be examined and discussed during the annual McDonald-Merrill-Ketcham (MMK) Award Lecture at the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law on March 4.
“Use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs has corrupted a wide range of athletic competitions, from the Olympics to the Tour de France to major league baseball and professional football,” said Professor David Orentlicher, co-director of the Hall Center for Law and Health at IU McKinney. “It is a good thing that sports officials crack down on athletes who use banned substances. Or is it? Dr. Norman Fost, a leading expert on the use of drugs in sports provides a skeptical view of the existing prohibitions on performance-enhancing drugs.”
Fost, M.D., M.P.H., Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and Bioethics, and Director of the Program in Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, will present on the topic “Banning Drugs in Sports: A Skeptical View” at noon in the Inlow Hall Wynne Courtroom. He is the recipient of the MMK Award for 2016.
The use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes has provoked considerable concern, led to strict rules and laws prohibiting the use of the drugs, and caused many athletes to lose their medals from past competitions or be expelled from future competitions. In his lecture, Professor Fost will discuss the arguments made to justify legal prohibitions on performance-enhancing drug use and explain why the prohibitions are not justified.
Professor Fost’s lecture will be followed by a panel discussion featuring the following experts:
Peter Schwartz, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine; and Interim Director at the Indiana University Center for Bioethics
Daniel Rusyniak, M.D., Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine
Mary Wilfert, M.Ed., Associate Director at the NCAA Sport Science Institute
Richard Kovacs, M.D., Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine; and Clinical Director at the Krannert Institute of Cardiology
Michael Emery, M.D., Indiana University School of Medicine; and Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Krannert Institute of Cardiology.
The event carries with it 2.0 hour2 of CLE. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
The annual McDonald-Merrill-Ketcham Memorial Lectureship and Award for Excellence in Law and Medicine is supported by a bequest to the IU McKinney School of Law and the Indiana University School of Medicine. This lecture and award brings leading scholars and policy makers in the fields of law and medicine to the Indianapolis campus for the benefit of students, faculty, the bar and the medical community.
