Professor Hill Publishes Latest Book on How Natural Law Impacts Modern Ideals
03/08/2016
Professor John Hill’s latest book, After the Natural Law: How the Classical Worldview Supports Our Modern Moral and Political Ideals has been published by Ignatius Press.
The book traces the development of western philosophy from classical to modern times.
“Western civilization stands at a crossroads such as we have not seen in two thousand years,” Professor Hill said. “Our most cherished moral and political values – freedom, responsibility, moral truth and human dignity – only make sense from the perspective of the classical understanding of the world. The book traces the development of the classical worldview through the insights of Plato, Aristotle, St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, among others. We cannot understand our deepest values, the book argues, without seeing that they depend on a view of the world that still believes in God, the human soul and moral truth. The book shows how modern philosophers, including Descartes, Locke, Hobbes and more contemporary thinkers, have chiseled away at the foundations of the classical understanding of the world, imperiling our most important values.”
Professor Hill holds a J.D. and a doctorate in philosophy, both of which he received from Georgetown University. In addition to being a professor of law at IU McKinney, where he teaches constitutional law, civil procedure, torts, jurisprudence and ethical and legal issues at the end of life, he also is a Grimes Fellow, and an adjunct professor of philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at IUPUI.
