IU McKinney Event to Celebrate Career of Retiring Justice Brent Dickson, '68

IU McKinney will present “A Tribute to Justice Brent Dickson’s Contributions to Indiana Constitutional Law” on March 29. Justice Dickson, ’68, will retire from the Indiana Supreme Court on April 29.
The event will feature several IU McKinney alumni who will address the impact of Justice Dickson’s jurisprudence on state constitutional law.
- Professor Michael DeBoer, LL.M. ’11, will present “Justice Dickson, State Constitutional Interpretation, and the Religion Provisions of the Indiana Constitution.” DeBoer is an associate professor of law at Faulkner Law School.
- “Justice Dickson’s Civil Tort Law Jurisprudence” will be considered by attorneys Maggie L. Smith and Roger Pardieck.
- Professor Joel Schumm, ’98, of IU McKinney and Daylon Welliver, ’96, of the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office, will explore the topic “In Majority and Dissent, Justice Dickson’s Shaping of Indiana’s Constitutional Criminal Jurisprudence.”
- The event will conclude with an examination of “Justice Dickson’s 30-year Influence on Indiana Constitutional Law,” by Jon Laramore.
This is a free event, but seating is limited and registration is required. A total of 2.5 hours of continuing legal education credit are available with this event which begins at 1:30 p.m. in the Inlow Hall Wynne Courtroom. A reception will follow at 4:15 p.m. in the atrium.
Justice Dickson served in private practice for 17 years before he was appointed to the bench in 1986. He was Indiana’s chief justice from May 15, 2012, until August 18, 2014, and he has served as an adjunct professor at the law school for over 10 years.
