IU McKinney to Host Summer Law and Leadership Academy
03/23/2016
The Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law will host its Summer Law and Leadership Academy the week of June 13-18 at Inlow Hall. The experience is designed to introduce undergraduate students from historically underrepresented background to law school and the career opportunities available with a law degree.
Students can expect to be introduced to the kinds of courses they will take in law school, have the opportunity to meet with attorneys working in a variety of areas in the legal and business communities, take part in law-related field trips, and take part in a mock trial.
The program is open to current undergraduate students who have completed at least 50 credit hours, and have at least a 2.7 grade point average. Students chosen for the program must be able to attend all sessions. Selected students will attend free of charge, and lunch is included each day. Students who wish to apply must do so by April 25, and include a letter of recommendation from a college professor or advisor.
This is the second year for the program. A total of 20 students took part in the inaugural class in Summer 2015. “Overall, this program is a wonderful opportunity to help students better understand the process of learning to ‘think like a lawyer’ and gain more knowledge about life in law school and beyond,” said Assistant Dean Chasity Thompson, ’02, of the law school’s Office of Professional Development. She is one of the program’s organizers, along with Professor Shawn Boyne.
