Emily Sargent Receives Leadership in Public Health Award
10/18/2016
IU McKinney 3L Emily Sargent, one of the inaugural IU Health Law Scholars, has received the Stephen Jay Award for Leadership in Public Health. She received the honor at the 2016 Indiana Public Health Conference. The award is given to a master of public health student who exhibits exemplary public health leadership, scholarship, and practice resulting in the improvement of public health in Indiana.
"I greatly appreciate the honor of receiving the Stephen Jay Award for Leadership in Public Health," Sargent said."I am very grateful for the multiple opportunities I've had to work alongside public health and legal professionals on current public health issues facing Indiana residents during my time in law and graduate school. I'm looking forward to continuing that work in the future."
"We could not be prouder of Emily. She is a great student and a wonderful person and richly deserves this award," said Professor Nicolas Terry, Executive Director of the Hall Center for Law and Health at IU McKinney. "Emily is a member of the inaugural class of our IU Health Law Scholars, joint degree candidates studying at both the school of law and the school of public health. This is a program we are immensely proud of and very grateful to IU Health for supporting; it seems fitting that a member of the inaugural class of this important program should receive this exceptional award."
Sargent, from Carmel, Indiana, regularly volunteers with IU McKinney’s efforts at the IU Student Outreach Clinic. The clinic provides a variety of services to the underserved in the neighborhood surrounding the clinic. A joint-degree student, she also is in the second year of the master of public health program at the IU Fairbanks School of Public Health, where she has a concentration in health policy and management.
Sargent is an active member of the IUPUI Public Health Corps, working on assignments that include researching sexual harassment/sexual assault laws for the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence. She also worked with the Vanderburgh County Health Department and their community partners to draft and codify a revised lead ordinance that reflects the latest standards for lead exposure. Sargent completed a master of public health internship in Summer 2016 with the Red Cross, where she worked in West Virginia helping flood victims as a volunteer emergency medical technician.
