Ji Hyun (Jennifer) Kim to Receive IndyBar Award for Pro Bono Service
10/19/2016
IU McKinney 3L Ji Hyun (Jennifer) Kim will be awarded the Indianapolis Bar Association’s 2016 Pro Bono Award in the Law Student category during the group’s annual recognition breakfast. At the time Professor Carrie Hagan nominated her for the honor, Kim had logged 509 hours of pro bono service so far during her law school career.
“She’s taken on more cases than any other student I currently have,” Professor Hagan said of Kim and her work in the Civil Practice Clinic, “and is constantly looking for ways to better the lives of the clients we serve here at the clinic, be it through individual representation or larger scale problem solving. She also brings a wide range of experiences to the clinic, all of which lead to a beautifully well rounded holistic representation for each client she serves.”
Kim began doing pro bono service during her 1L year, when she began volunteering with the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic (NCLC) expungement help desk. Kim has logged about 100 hours with NCLC, and a little more than 400 hours with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
“I am honored to be selected as the recipient,” Kim said. “My law school career would not have been possible without generous scholarship donors. I wanted to give back to the community by donating my hours so I started volunteering. I learned a lot while volunteering so it helped me gain experience as well.”
Kim has also worked as a judicial extern to Justice Steven David, ’82, at the Indiana Supreme Court and to Magistrate Judge Tim Baker at the U.S. District Court. She’s also an at-large member on Indybar’s Law Student Division executive board and was a Dean’s Tutorial Society fellow during her 2L year.
Kim will receive the honor at the IndyBar’s annual recognition breakfast on November 15 at Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis.
In addition, Julie Alexander, ’04, will be honored in the Attorney Aiding Individuals category for her pro bono service.
They are not the only ones with McKinney ties being honored at the breakfast.
