Dr. Ruth Reichard, '85, to Discuss the Early Years of the AIDS Crisis on November 3
10/21/2016
Dr. Ruth Reichard will present a talk titled, “Capital and Commodification: Law and the AIDS Crisis” at IU McKinney on November 3. Her talk is part of the 2016 Faculty Colloquia Series.
Dr. Reichard will discuss the role of the courts during the first two decades of the HIV-AIDS pandemic, including how “blood shield” statutes foreclosed the recovery of damages for people infected via transfusions and commercial blood products. Dr. Reichard’s forthcoming book, Blood and Steel: How AIDS and Deindustrialization Divided a Community, tells the story of internationally famous AIDS victim Ryan White, who was infected through blood treatments, and his hometown of Kokomo, Indiana.
Dr. Reichard, who graduated from IU McKinney in 1985, received her Ph.D. in American History from Indiana University in 2015.
The event will take place in Room 385 at Inlow Hall from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. This free event is open to the public, but registration is encouraged.
