Mike Pence, '86, Becomes Nation's 48th Vice President

Vice President Mike Pence, ’86, was sworn into office on January 20. Indiana’s 50th governor, Pence is now the nation’s 48th vice president.
Pence was sworn in at 11:53 a.m. by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, before a crowd of onlookers estimated at nearly 900,000. Also in attendance at the ceremony was former Vice President Dan Quayle, ’74.
The Columbus, Indiana, native is a graduate of Columbus North High School. He graduated from Hanover College in 1981. As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Vice President Pence represented Indiana's 2nd District from 2001-2003, and Indiana's 6th District from 2003 until his inauguration to the governor's office in January 2013.
While a member of the U.S. House, Pence served on the Committee on Foreign Affairs, and was vice chair of the subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia. He also served on the Committee on the Judiciary and was vice chair of its subcommittee on the Constitution. He also served on the subcommittee on Intellectual Property, Competition, and the Internet. Pence was elected Republican Conference Chairman in 2008, the third-highest ranking Republican leadership position. He was the first Representative from Indiana to hold a U.S. House leadership position since 1981.
