Lilia Judson, '75, Receives National Award for Court Administration
01/30/2017
Lilia Judson, ’75, has been named the recipient of the Warren E. Burger Award for Excellence in Court Administration for 2016. The honor is one of the highest awards given by the National Center for State Courts.
Judson, who retired in September 2016 as executive director of the Indiana Division of State Court, began working with the Judicial Study Commission while in law school at IU McKinney, and decided she would rather work in the managerial and business aspects of the judiciary rather than work as a practicing attorney. She became the assistant director of the Division of State Court Administration when it was created by the Indiana General Assembly in 1977. She subsequently served as director, and was named executive director in 1997. Judson served as president of the Conference of State Court Administrators and as vice chair of the National Center for State Courts Board of Directors in 2010-2011.
Among her many achievements, Judson built a national reputation for her work in court technology and helping the Indiana courts implement electronic filing. She also developed a case numbering system for all trial courts in Indiana.
