Professor Boyne to Teach Inside-Out Course during Summer 2017
03/08/2017
Professor Shawn Boyne will teach a course at the Indianapolis Re-Entry Facility this summer. The course will include a combined enrollment of law students and "inside" students. In the course "Race, Citizenship, and Crime," inside and outside students together will explore how the legal system helps to construct race, citizenship, and crime.
The class will meet on Tuesday evenings in Summer 2017 at the DuVal Men's Work Release Center. Students who wish to enroll in Law 817 must attend a mandatory information session on March 21 from 12:45 to 1:30 p.m. in Room 375.
Professor Boyne is one of more than 700 professors worldwide who has received the training. She completed the 7-day, 60-hour intensive training in the inside-out teaching pedagogy at the Oregon State Penitentiary in 2014. Although several IUPUI professors have taught undergraduate-level inside-out courses, this marks the first time that an inside-out course will be offered at IU McKinney. Professor Boyne believes that the course will be life-changing for the students who participate, as the course will emphasize collaboration and dialogue and invite students to take the lead in addressing crime, justice, and other issues of social concern.
The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program, which was founded at Temple University in 1997, trains individuals to conduct classes inside prisons and re-entry programs. Unlike traditional classes taught within prisons, these classes contain a mixture of outside (i.e. law students) and inside (inmates) students. Inside-Out founder and director Lori Pompa shares her program model with educators around the country. Those interested in learning more about the program can access videos on the Inside-Out website.
Professor Boyne teaches criminal law, criminal procedure, cybercrime, and national security law. She currently is also participating in IUPUI’s Mosaic Faculty Fellow program and serves as co-director of evaluation and assessment at IU McKinney.
