Law and Leadership Academy Offers Undergraduates Chance to Explore Law School
03/24/2017
The Law and Leadership Academy at IU McKinney is entering its third year. The program is designed to introduce undergraduate students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to law school and the career opportunities available to those with a law degree.
IU McKinney 1L Kayla Moody-Grant took part in the academy while an undergraduate student at Indiana University in Bloomington, where she majored in criminal justice and international studies with a minor in Spanish. Her grandfather was a criminal-defense attorney in Indianapolis, and she grew up hearing stories about his work. The academy experience gave her a taste of law school so she could ensure it would be a good fit.
“The academy was amazing!” Moody-Grant said. “I developed a good understanding for what law school entailed, and it affirmed my desire to apply for law school. I made great relationships with fellow peers of the academy, and met great professors who I’ve had the pleasure of having in class this year.”
Students can expect to be introduced to the kinds of courses they will take in law school, have the opportunity to meet with attorneys working in a variety of areas in the legal and business communities, take part in law-related field trips, and take part in a mock trial.
The program is open to current undergraduate students who have completed at least 50 credit hours, and have at least a 2.7 grade point average. Students chosen for the program must be able to attend all sessions. Selected students will attend free of charge, and lunch is included each day. Students who wish to apply must do so by April 17, and include a letter of recommendation from a college professor or advisor. The program is organized by IU McKinney Professor Shawn Boyne, and Assistant Dean Chasity Thompson, ’02, of the Office of Professional Development.
