IU McKinney Honors Students for Pro Bono Service
04/05/2017
IU McKinney’s graduating class of 2017 contributed well over 20,000 hours of pro bono service, and that dedication was celebrated at a reception which took place April 4 in the atrium at the law school.
Judge Jose Salinas, ’97, of Marion Superior Court, presented a keynote address to the students. He congratulated all the students for their work on behalf of those who are most in need, and he urged them not to stop their pro bono service upon graduation. “My goal is to see you in my courtroom in the next five years, advocating on behalf of someone in need,” Judge Salinas said.
Andrea Stanarevic, (in the photo at left) a May 2017 J.D. candidate, received the John Paul Berlon Award of Excellence. Stanarevic came to the United States with her family as a refugee from the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. She is fluent in Serbian, Bosnian, and Croatian. An Indiana Conference for Legal Education Opportunity Fellow, Stanarevic interned for Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson, ’83; Judge Melissa May, ’84; and served in the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
Students at the event were honored according to the number of hours of pro bono service they provided.
