Professor Huffman Comments in U.S. News on DOJ Suit to Block Airline Mergers

Professor Max Huffman commented on the recent lawsuit filed by the United States Department of Justice to block the merger of U.S. Airways and American Airlines. A story on the proposed merger appears in U.S. News and World Report. If allowed to proceed, the merger would create the largest domestic airline and decrease competition among carriers, making it easier for them to charge higher prices to travelers.
Preventing this kind of consolidation is likely the aim of the suit, Professor Huffman said in the article.
"When you get down to four airlines that effectively own air service in the U.S.,” Professor Huffman said in the story, “these players are too big for any new entrants to come in and be a serious competitive threat going forward." Earlier in his career, he worked in the Justice Department as a trial attorney in the Antitrust Division.
Professor Huffman teaches antitrust, bankruptcy, consumer law, and commercial law, and is a Dean’s Fellow. His scholarly interests lie primarily in the areas of competition and consumer law. He joined the faculty in 2008.
