Jeff Papa, '99, Named a Sagamore of the Wabash, Returning to Private Practice
05/02/2017
Jeff Papa, ’99, was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Eric Holcomb. The award is one of the state’s highest individual recognitions. He also is leaving state government and returning to private practice.
The term "sagamore" was used by the Native Americans in the northeastern United States to describe a great man or woman among the tribe to whom the chief would look for wisdom, guidance and advice. Similarly, the Sagamore of the Wabash is given to those who have rendered distinguished service to the state and contributed greatly to Hoosiers statewide. Papa received the honor from Governor Holcomb during a ceremony on April 27 at the Statehouse.
Papa is leaving his position as Indiana Senate chief of staff and chief legal counsel; he has worked for the Indiana Senate since 2007. He will return to private practice at the Indianapolis law firm Barnes & Thornburg, where he will practice immigration law. He previously worked at the law firm from 2001 until he joined the Senate staff.
Papa is also resigning from the Zionsville Town Council, effective June 30. He joined the town council in 2010, and served for five years before becoming the town’s first mayor. He was the council’s vice president in 2012, and served as president in 2013 and 2014.
